Can a Metal Water Bottle Be Used for Hot Water?

As people try to veer away from plastic, metal water bottles have become more popular. However, many people still don’t fully understand the pros and cons that come with these bottles.

For instance, can they even be used for hot water?

Well, that’s what we are going to find out today.

Can a metal water bottle be used for hot water?

Yes, metal water bottles can be used for storing hot water, but only if the metal bottle has more than one metallic layer or is insulated.

Multi-layer stainless steel bottles are particularly great at holding hot beverages and can even maintain their heat for hours. However, aluminum bottles don’t have this ability.

Can hot water melt a metal water bottle?

No, hot water won’t be able to melt your metal water bottle, even if it’s a one-layer stainless steel or aluminum bottle.

The melting point of aluminum is 1220 degrees Fahrenheit, and it’s even higher for stainless steel – 2750 degrees Fahrenheit. So, since water boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit, hot water is not able to melt metal.

However, you should avoid putting hot water in single-layer metal water bottles due to the fact that the bottle can get really hot and therefore pose a safety risk to you or those around you.

Will my metal water bottles keep water hot?

Insulated metal water bottles will keep your water hot for many hours. The Hydro Flask, for example, will keep beverages hot for up to 12 hours.

Simple, one-layer stainless steel water bottles will also be able to keep water or your drinks hot for a few hours.

However, it’s a different story with aluminum bottles, they won’t keep your water or hot drinks warm for very long.

Can you boil water in metal bottles?

Yes, you can use stainless steel water bottles to boil water in them either to make the water safe to drink or to prepare hot beverages. Even single-wall stainless steel water bottles are suitable for boiling water in them.

You can also boil water in aluminum bottles, however, there are several risks associated with doing so. Aluminum bottles can not only become hot quickly, making them unsafe to touch, but if you’re boiling your water on a campfire, it can actually get hot enough to start melting the aluminum and therefore deform your water bottle.

Other benefits of metal water bottles

Whether you are using an aluminum or stainless steel one, metal bottles come with a host of benefits. These include:

They are more durable than plastic

If there is one thing that metal bottles have going for them, it has to be their longevity, especially when compared to plastic. They can be used for years without looking old or rugged.

They don’t hold odors or tastes

As long as you properly wash them, metal water bottles don’t transfer tastes from one drink to another. They don’t hold odors either; a great upgrade from plastic bottles. However, stainless steel water bottles are known to occasionally impart a metallic taste to drinks.

They can be recycled

Apart from being made from natural elements, metal water bottles can also be recycled. Generally, their production and recycling are less toxic than that of plastic bottles. As such, they are considered to be more environmentally friendly.

Stainless steel vs Aluminum

While aluminum and stainless steel water bottles do have a lot in common, they also have some major differences. These include:

Stainless steel doesn’t need an epoxy lining

Unlike aluminum, stainless steel doesn’t react with acidic drinks. As such, its bottles don’t need to have epoxy linings like aluminum ones do. This in turn eliminates the risk of any BPA leaking into your drinks.

In this regard, stainless steel water bottles are safer to use than their aluminum counterparts.

Stainless steel bottles are usually dishwasher safe

Although not always the case, stainless steel water bottles are usually dishwasher safe, making them easier to clean than their aluminum counterparts.

And to make matters worse for aluminum bottles, you can’t use harsh cleaning detergents when washing them.

Aluminum bottles dent more easily

While aluminum bottles are significantly lighter and less expensive than stainless steel ones, they dent more easily. As such, the latter tend to be more durable than the former.

All things considered, it makes more sense to invest in a high-quality stainless steel bottle.

Metal bottles are better than plastic ones

Whether you go for an aluminum water bottle or a stainless steel one, it is still a better option than plastic bottles.

Metal bottles are better for both the environment and you. They are safer to use and cause less pollution. And ultimately, the only water bottles that can hold a candle to them are glass ones.

  1. Could you please specify, when referring to a stainless steel water bottle is it single layer, double layered or vacuum insulated?

Ive read in other places double layered can explode if heated, is this true?

Is vacuum insulation truly in a vacuum?
And do those blow up when heated?

  2. I have been using the drafting pencil since highschool, 1967. I had lots of lead to use up. The lead I’ve been using is 2H Lyra Orlow 6317. Is there a source for that lead or a subsitute?
